DESCRIPTION:Join Garden Manager Matthew Bagshaw for a workshop that covers all things fermented food! In this hands-on workshop\, we’ll make sauerkraut\, with each participant leaving with their own jar to take home and ferment. We’ll talk about bacteria and yeast and the role they play in many of the foods we eat from bread and beer to pickles and yogurt and learn some tips on how to steer the microbes in the right direction for your at home projects. \n\n10 registrants minimum required for program to run. Piedmont Park Conservancy believes cost should not be a barrier to participation. We’ll discuss some basic steps you can take at home and in your community to be more ready in unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances\, and\, hopefully\, assuage some of the anxiety or helplessness that you might feel at the thought of a disaster. \nProgram requires 10 participants minimum to run. SUMMARY:Mushroom Growing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we inoculate hardwood logs with oyster mushroom spawn. This technique is used to produce various kinds of mushrooms commercially or at home. Participants can expect to learn the basics of how mushrooms grow and how to grow them in this way including drilling holes\, using specialized tools to fill these holes with sawdust spawn\, and sealing the holes with wax. We will also discuss other cultivation techniques used commercially as well as ones suited to the at-home hobbyist. It will be a fun way to learn a new skill\, make some friends\, and make use of the shadier parts of your yard or garden. Each participant will leave with their very own inoculated log. \nPre-registration required for each session. 10 registrants minimum required for program to run. Piedmont Park Conservancy believes cost should not be a barrier to participation.
