Join a league or grab some friends, and bring out your competitive spirit in organized sports. The Active Oval, a former race track, is one of the highlights of Piedmont Park for fitness lovers. Here you’ll find a running track, two soccer fields, two softball fields and two sand volleyball courts.

Due to size, fencing and turf management, several sports are not permitted on the grounds. Please see the guidelines below for hours, rules, and details.

Active Oval Information

Active Oval areas can be reserved by obtaining a permit. Below are the hours for permitted play. Please bring your permit with you. Otherwise, the areas are available as first-come, first-serve. Please note, the fields are not lighted.

*Fridays are open leisure play. There are no permitted activities on Fridays.  Friday leisure play reservations will be available in 2 hour increments on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up sheets for leisure play reservations are field specific and are located at the north and south ball field kiosks.

Rules to Follow

  • Cleats are allowed on the softball and soccer fields for permitted play only
  • Cleats are not allowed for leisure play or practice play
  • Piedmont Park Conservancy manages and schedules league play for the Active Oval but does not currently organize leagues

Reservation Information

No Play Allowed

Due to the Active Oval field dimensions, lack of proper fencing and turf management practices there is no organized play allowed in the following sports:

  • Baseball
  • Cricket
  • Tackle Football
  • Golf
  • Field Hockey
  • Lacrosse
  • Rugby

Tennis Information

The Sharon E. Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park is a fully staffed, public facility, offering play on 12 lighted hard courts. Numerous opportunities exist for juniors and adults to participate in league play or weekly clinics and drills.

  • Monday-Friday 9:00am – 1pm / 5:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Saturday 9:00am – 1:00pm
  • Closed Sundays
  • Courts can be reserved in 2-hour blocks (9am – 11am / 11am – 1pm and 4pm – 6pm / 6pm – 8pm)
