PREPARING FOR BLUBIRD SEASON IN PIEDMONT PARK
March 2026
Each spring, bluebirds return to Piedmont Park in search of safe places to nest. This year, that search begins with a small but meaningful effort led by two dedicated volunteers.
Two dedicated volunteers, Larry and Leslie, recently spent time in the Park taking down several aging bluebird boxes and installing 11 rebuilt boxes in thoughtful new locations. Their goal is simple: create safe, well-placed nesting spaces that give bluebirds the best chance to thrive.
Unlike the previous boxes, which were set in concrete, the new installations use a more flexible method. A two-foot piece of rebar anchors each pole into the ground, allowing the box to be adjusted if needed. If groundskeeping needs change or wildlife activity suggests a better placement, the boxes can be moved without disrupting nesting success.
Throughout the spring and summer, Larry and Leslie will continue monitoring the boxes, checking for occupancy and ensuring that nesting conditions remain healthy. If the boxes fill quickly, additional ones may be added next season.
This kind of stewardship often happens quietly. There are no crowds or ceremonies — just steady, attentive care. But it plays an important role in maintaining the ecological health of the Park.
Piedmont Park is home to a wide range of wildlife, even in the heart of Atlanta. Efforts like this help create safe habitat for native bird species and reflect the shared responsibility that keeps the Park thriving.
We’re grateful for volunteers like Larry and Leslie, whose time and expertise make this work possible.
Fingers crossed we’ll see new residents settling in soon.
